Rose hips

Walked across the fields to the next village and back today, in bright sunshine and a biting northerly wind. The hedgerows are still bright with hawthorn berries and rose hips, and alive with fieldfares and redwings feasting on them. Glorious.

Sock wool

I know I'm not supposed to buy any more sock wool until I've knitted up some of what I've already got, but I couldn't resist these :-)

Lest we forget

In memory of all those who fought and died (and also those who fought and lived, which can be hard too). Whatever the side, and whatever the cause, each fallen soldier was someone's child.

I do not seek to glorify war. Indeed, since becoming a mother myself, the futility of war has become even more clear to me. But I honour bravery, and dedication, and courage, and my heart goes out to those still serving and to all the families who hold them dear.

I watched my son standing with his team at the rugby ground this morning as we observed the two minute silence, all those fine young lads, some old enough to have served in previous conflicts, and I prayed that they never have to experience war.

St Andrew's

As a consequence of our village being made up of two neighbouring villages that grew together, we have two Church of England churches, both (confusingly) called St Andrew's (we also have a Methodist church, a Baptist church, and a Salvation Army church, but no temples, synagogues or mosques). This is one of the St Andrew's, illuminated by this morning's glorious sunshine.
