Happy Halloween!

Evening sunshine

Now that the clocks have gone back it's getting dark really early here. This evening the sun was setting, long, low and golden across the village green when I went to meet DD for her guitar lesson.

Stirring the pudding

The kids and I made the Christmas puddings today. As is our family tradition, all the ingredients went into a bucket and the children thoroughly enjoyed getting utterly messy by stirring it all up with their bare hands. And making their wishes as they did so, of course!

Fuschias

These grow all around our garden, a legacy of the last owners. They're beautiful flowers, but their real appeal lies in how long they continue to bloom and look beautiful - in a mild-wintered year with no really hard frosts they are still in flower on Christmas Day.

Autumn on the village green

Another shot from the village green, because it's so glorious out there this morning.

Socks for the boy

The boy wanted socks, so I knitted him some. Yarn is Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in the Camouflage colourway. They came out as good 'boy' socks, I think :-)

First frost

First frost of the season this morning - only three degrees above freezing, and DH had to scrape the ice off his car window.

A beautiful bright and breezy drying day out there today.

Son of Mr Pumpkin-head

Last year's Halloween pumpkin ended up in the compost, and, as a result, this summer unintentional triffids pumpkin plants sprouted in odd corners of the garden. This one, by the greenhouse, was left to do its thing, with the result that we have two small but nonetheless carveable homegrown pumpkins for this year's decorations. All the better for being unexpected :-)

Owl thing

Years ago, aged 3 or 4 at nursery school, my son made this little creature for me. I think it's an owl - he can't remember, and at the time it would have been rude for me to suggest that it wasn't instantly recognizeable...

When he gave it to me he said that I could put it on my desk at work so that every time I looked at it I would think of him. So it has sat on my desk ever since, and I do just that :-)
